Award-winning choreographer Jasmyn Fyffe is described as “ a young artist whose body of work is developing in a style all her own.” (Sway magazine – Anya Wassenberg). Fyffe was the recipient of the 2013 Frankie Award (Montreal) for most outstanding choreography/choreographer for her 50-min work “Pulse.”
Jasmyn has been commissioned by Dance Ontario, Iona Secondary School, City Dance Corps youth company, Earl Haig Secondary School, Ballet Jorgen, Mayfield Secondary School, Martha Hicks School of Ballet, Pivotal Motion Dance Theatre, York Memorial Collegiate Institute, Wish Opera, Dance Ontario, Cawthra Park Secondary School, Cathedral Productions, Obsidian Theatre, Dramatic Change Youth Theatre, Oakwood Collegiate Institute and Copper Coin Arts Association.
She is the director of Jasmyn Fyffe Dance, for which she has been choreographing and directing for the past seven years. Jasmyn has created a total of twelve works, both full length and short ensemble pieces. Under her direction, JFD has produced a show in Montreal and presented a performance in Brooklyn, NY. Over the past five years, she has also produced four shows in Toronto, both independently and in collaboration with other choreographers. Past works include “Into the Roots…Beyond the Leaves” in collaboration with Vivine Scarlett, and “Gimme One Riddim” in collaboration with Natasha Powell. This past summer, Fyffe participated in an arts festival in Sinop, Turkey called “Sinopale” where she created and performed a solo, in addition to setting choreography on youth dancers.
As an independent dancer, Jasmyn has performed in the touring musical UMOJA and has danced for Grammy Award winning artist Nelly Furtado. She has worked with: Gadfly, Hanna Kiel, Vanessa Jane Kimmons, Red Sky Performance, Artists in Motion, Dance Migration, K’aeja d’Dance, KasheDance, Linda Garneau and international music sensation Kirk Franklin. In addition, Fyffe has performed in four Toronto Fringe Festival Shows between 2011-2013 and one of them, “Jack Your Body”, went on to be presented in the Next Stage Theatre Festival 2014, to sold out audiences. Jasmyn has performed five solo works, one commissioned by Karen Kaeja. These solo works have been performed at: Dance Made in Canada Festival, Pulse Dance Conference, Older and Reckless, Animating Spaces (Kaeja d’Dance) and Fresh Blood.
Jasmyn has been the recipient of ten government grants (Toronto, Ontario and Canada Arts Councils) that have supported her career tremendously in terms of production, creation, travel and professional development. In 2012 she was nominated for the first ever Young Center Dance Awards, and has been a guest choreographer and Mentor for Dare to Dance 2012-2014, with the Toronto District School Board. She was very successful with her two most recent productions. “Gimme One Riddim”, in collaboration with choreographer Natasha Powell, was produced at the Enwave Theatre as part of NextSteps, through Harbourfront Centre. "Pulse" was presented in Brooklyn, New York at the Wave Rising Series, the PULSE Dance Conference in North Bay, Ontario, and the Montreal Fringe Festival, 2013. Jasmyn recently produced 'Pulse' in the Next Stage Theatre Festival, at the Factory Theatre in Toronto, to rave reviews.
